How to Measure Your Child's Feet for the Right Shoe Size

Children's feet grow quickly — sometimes a full size every few months. Regular measurement ensures your child is wearing shoes that fit properly, which is important for healthy foot development.

When to Measure

Check your child's shoe fit regularly:

  1. Every 2-3 months for children under 3 years old.
  2. Every 4-6 months for children aged 3-6.
  3. Every 6 months for children over 6.
  4. Whenever your child complains about shoe discomfort.
  5. Before buying new shoes, even if the old pair still looks fine.

How to Measure

Use the same paper-and-pen method as adults, with these adjustments:

  1. Have your child stand still with weight on both feet. You may need someone to help hold them steady.
  2. Measure both feet — it's common for one to be larger.
  3. Measure in the afternoon when feet are slightly larger.
  4. Have your child wear their usual socks during measurement.
  5. For very young children who can't stand, measure while they're being held upright.

How Much Room to Leave

Leave about 1 cm (roughly a thumb's width) between the longest toe and the front of the shoe. This allows room for growth and natural foot movement. Too much room (more than 1.5 cm) can cause tripping, while too little room restricts growth.

Signs the Shoes Are Too Small

Watch for these indicators that your child needs new shoes:

  1. Red marks or indentations on the feet after removing shoes.
  2. Your child resists putting shoes on or complains of pain.
  3. Toes are curled or pressed against the front of the shoe.
  4. The heel slips excessively (shoes may be too long but too narrow).
  5. Worn-out toe area from toes pressing against the material.
