Foot Measurement Tips — Get the Most Accurate Results

Getting an accurate foot measurement is the foundation of finding well-fitting shoes. These tips will help you avoid common pitfalls and get measurements you can trust.

Best Time to Measure

Measure your feet at the end of the day, ideally in the afternoon or evening. Feet naturally swell throughout the day due to walking and standing. A morning measurement can be up to half a size smaller than an evening measurement.

Account for Socks

Always measure with the type of socks you plan to wear. Thick athletic socks can add 2-3mm to your foot measurement compared to thin dress socks, which can affect your size.

Both Feet Matter

Most people have one foot slightly larger than the other — sometimes by as much as a full size. Always measure both feet and use the larger measurement when selecting shoes. This is especially important if you've never been professionally measured.

Weight Distribution

Stand with your full weight evenly distributed on both feet while being measured. Your foot spreads under body weight, making it measurably wider and slightly longer than when sitting or lifted.

Digital vs. Physical Measurement

While some apps offer foot measurement through your phone camera, a physical measurement with paper and ruler remains the most reliable method for home use. The paper method eliminates parallax errors and device calibration issues.

When to Remeasure

Consider remeasuring your feet if:

  1. You haven't measured in over a year.
  2. You have gained or lost significant weight.
  3. You are pregnant or have recently given birth.
  4. You are over 40 (feet can gradually change shape and size with age).
  5. You notice your current shoes feel different than they used to.
